American Players Theatre
American Players Theatre is located on 110 acres of hilly woods and meadows above the Wisconsin River, 40 miles west of Madison. The APT amphitheater is built within a natural hollow atop an oak-wooded hill. Under the dome of sky, 1148 comfortably cushioned seats encompass three sides of the stage. Each year five plays are performed in rotating repertory in the outdoor theater up the hill, and three in the 200-seat, indoor Touchstone Theatre during a season that runs from mid-June to mid-October. On weekday mornings in September and October, more than 23,000 students from around Wisconsin take in a show as part of the Student Matinee Series.
The natural beauty of the great outdoors is an integral part of the APT experience. Picnicking in the woods is popular before and between shows. Patrons may bring their own picnic or purchase gourmet picnic dinners provided by the Hubbard Avenue Diner in Middleton, WI. Picnics are made fresh daily and delivered to the theater.
There are hiking trails and two walking paths leading up the hill to the theater. A shuttle bus is also available.
