Waiting for Lefty
By Clifford Odets
Directed by Raeleen McMillion
The play, written in 1935, tells the story of a strike by New York City's cab drivers. "Odets's language is the speech of New York: half-educated Jews, Italians, Irish, transformed into something new-minted, individual and unique," observed by Harold Clurman, critic and director of New York City's Group Theater. "It is composed of words heard on the street, in drugstores, bars, sports arenas and rough restaurants." A boisterous reaction to rising unemployment, falling wages and the concentration of power, Waiting for Lefty also is a passionate call for unity and action.
