Master Class
By Terrence McNally
Directed by Norma Saldivar
Angela Iannone returns to Madison to reprise her signature role as Maria Callas in Terrence McNallyís play Master Class. Ms. Iannone, an award-winning actress, has portrayed Callas at both Milwaukee and Madison Repertory Theatres, but it has been nearly ten years since Iannone has performed locally. McNally, author of such plays as Corpus Christi and Love! Valor! Compassion!, drew inspiration from transcripts from Callasí 1971 master classes at Julliard. Combining soaring arias and scathing criticism that only a world-class diva could serve up, Callas seduces the audience with memories of her illustrious performances, the passion of lost lovers ñ particularly Aristotle Onassis, and a crackling wit. The setting for Callasí apparition is a Julliard rehearsal hall where the talents of her three students are subject to intense scrutiny & criticism. Both humorous and poignant, Callasí instruction renders her students to tears while pushing them towards a realization of what it means to sacrifice for oneís art.
