A well known lecturer, Sheridan Whiteside, dines at the house of the Stanley's and slips on their doorstep, breaking his hip. He is confined to stay at the Stanley's house for six weeks. During his stay chaos runs rampid as he turns the household upside down with phone bills, convicts and famous celebrities.
