Young Shakespeare Player's Winter Workshop Performances - Bless Thy Five Wits (and Four Humours!)
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Richard and Anne DiPrima
Shakespeare presents the Human Mind.
Elizabethans believed that, just as the body has five senses, the mind has five wits: common wit, imagination, fantasy, calculation, and memory. They also believed that four basic fluids, or ‘humours,‘ of the body had to be mixed or ‘tempered’ properly, or the mind and emotions would be badly affected. (We still talk of ‘good humor‘ and good and bad ‘tempers‘ and ‘temperaments‘!) As our Workshop scenes will show, these ‘wits’ and ‘humours‘ — and
sometimes their absence or ill mixture! — created the basis of great Shakespearean drama. Shakespeare has been called ‘the greatest psychologist ever to lift a pen.‘ These glorious scenes of passion, humor , and madness will help show why.See www.ysp.org for more information.
