The Serpent: A Ceremony
By Jean-Claude van Itallie in collaboration with the Open Theater
Directed by Neil Scharnick
The 1960s were shaped by social and political turbulence punctuated by a series of terrible and dispiriting assassinations. These events prompted Joseph Chaikin and the members of the Open Theater to seek an explanation why humanity had fallen so low. This search led them back through history and myth to the beginning—to the Garden of Eden and mankind’s first sins. This inventive, Obie Award-winning retelling of the stories of Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel renders the biblical accounts strangely unfamiliar yet strikingly relevant to both 1969 and today.
