To quote the play, Lanford Wilson's Talley's Folly is "a waltz - a no-holds-barred romantic story." On a moonlight summer night in 1944, Sally Talley, a nurse's aide from a conservative, wealthy, Protestant family, and Matt Friedman, a German-Jewish accountant from St. Louis, eleven years Sally's senior, hold a clandestine rendezvous in the abandoned Talley family boathouse. The two cautiously feel their way to love, through the thicket of Talley family disapproval and their own complicated pasts.

Talley's Folly earned Lanford Wilson the 1980 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the Broadway production earned numerous Tony Award nominations, including Best Play.
