Romeo & Juliet: A Theatre LILA Invention
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Jessica Lanius
Love is love. But what if your first true love was someone you’d been told to hate? And what if your first love was someone of the same gender? Both are forbidden. And yet. . . undeniable.
Theatre LILA’s diverse cast of actors will explore — and explode — Shakespeare’s poetry, re-imagining it through movement and music to create an unforgettable, immersive theatre experience. This dual language (Spanish and English) re-invention of the classic tale is designed for the next generation of young lovers. Themes of tolerance, forgiveness, love, religion, violence, racism and homophobia are at the core of this adaptation.
Directed by Theatre LILA Artistic Director Jessica Lanius, the production features original music by GW Rodriguez, choreography by AJ Juarez, and the performances of Michael Herold, Clare Haden, Peter Hunt, and Jessica Jane Witham. The roles of Romeo and Juliet will be played by Kelsey Rodriguez and HJ Farr.
This production is sponsored by The American Girl Fund for Children, Dane Arts, Great Performance Fund for Theater, a component of the Madison Community Foundation, Oak Bank, TASC and Strang, Pattesson, Renning, Lewis and Lacy.
