Jesusland
By David Starkey
Directed by Jeremy Thomas Poulsen
After the November 2004 presidential election, some Americans celebrated, some mourned, others raged, still others organized. David Starkey wrote a play. The day after the election, a map began circulating on the Internet showing the blue Democratic states attached to The United States of Canada. The red Republican states had been renamed Jesusland. The play takes place in the future, after the blue states' secession. Hank has come to New York from Texas to be with his lover, Henry. Meanwhile, in Texas, Hank's sister, Agnes, is just moving in with her lover, Mayrene. At a time when many Americans are thinking about gay marriage and many nations are passing progressive legislation, Jesusland asks, "What if...?"
