Hello Dolly!

HELLO, DOLLY! is the story of Mrs. Dolly Levi’s efforts to marry Horace Vandergelder, the well-known half-a-millionaire, and send his money circulating among the people like rainwater. Along the way she also succeeds in matching up the young and beautiful Widow Molloy with Vandergelder’s head clerk, Cornelius Hackl; Cornelius’ assistant, Barnaby Tucker, with Mrs. Molloy’s assistant, Minnie Fay; and the struggling artist, Ambrose Kemper, with Mr. Vandergelder’s weeping niece, Ermengarde. Mrs. Levi tracks Vandergelder to his hay and feed store in Yonkers, then by train back to Mrs. Molloy’s hat shop in New York, out into the streets of the city where they are all caught up in the great Fourteenth Street Association Parade, and finally to the most elegant and expensive restaurant in town, the Harmonia Gardens. What happens in the end? Dolly gets her man, of course, and she even makes him glad she caught him!

“Hello Dolly” features classic musical numbers such as Put On Your Sunday Clothes, Ribbons Down My Back, Before the Parade Passes By, Elegance, It Only Takes A Moment, So Long, Dearie, and of course the title song of the show, Hello Dolly!

The Watertown Players will be holding open auditions for their upcoming production of the classic musical comedy, “Hello Dolly,” on Saturday, August 9 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at The Market, 210 S. Water Street, Watertown. Try-outs are open to anyone with an interest and desire to act. Many good roles are available, from the leading role of Dolly Levi, to her love interest, Horace Vandergelder, a gruff businessman. Other parts include Vandergelder’s shop assistant Barnaby Tucker and Cornelius Hackle, the Widow Molloy and her assistant Minnie Fay, Ambrose Kemper, a frustrated artist, and his intended, Ermengarde, Vandergelder’s niece. Other roles include waiters and townspeople. Backstage staff are also needed.
Those wishing to audition for a role should come prepared to sing a song of no more than a minute in duration (an accompanist will be on hand), and they will be expected to read from the script. Rehearsals will begin in August and run three to four days per week. The show will be performed at the Market October 10-11 and October 17-18. The show is under the direction of Annette Weirick.
