In the late 1700s, Russia was ruled by the empress known to history as Catherine the Great, a brilliant figure who wrote plays and essays, who corresponded with the storyteller Grimm and the philosopher Voltaire, who led her nation to diplomatic and political triumphs, and who scandalized Europe with her love affairs. In this very funny short play, Shaw gives us his own vision of the private Catherine as she meets and flirts with a prudish, stiff-necked, handsome young English officer. Taking part in the encounter are her zany Russian courtiers, led by her former lover and the leader of her government, the outrageous, shrewd, crude, drunken Grigori Patiomkin.
