A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
Book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Directed by Martin McClendon
"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" is a great mixture of slapstick, farce, and music that is filled to the brim with zinging one-liners that have double meanings. "Forum" is set in Ancient Rome, where slaves were fashionable, virgins were regarded as objects to be conquered, and Eunuchs were in abundance. It is the story of a slave, Pseudolus, who is trying to buy his freedom from his owner Hero who happens to be the son of a dirty old man, Senex and Domina. Hero has fallen in love with a virgin, Phillia, who has been sold to Captain Miles Gloriosus. Hero would give anything for Phillia, including Pseudolus' freedom. Most of the play includes Pseudolus trying to arrange a way for Hero and Phillia to be together forever. He runs into many obstacles including Hero's parents, the captain to whom Phillia has been promised to, and Hysterium, the slave-in-chief.
