Fall for Dance: Bright Nights
By Lisa Thurrell
Directed by Lisa Thurrell
In September we collaborate with Riad Dance Company to bring you a concert celebrating the human spirit with a dynamic, cross-cultural blend of modern and ethnic Middle Eastern dance. Dance reveals the connections among cultures and people in a direct and evocative way. As Sadira, artistic director of Riad Dance, explains, ?The Middle East is a night culture. There?s a whole music genre called Layal that praises all aspects of the night. A lot of dance festivals take place outdoors at night. The markets are open late, colored lights are strung across the streets, entire families dressed in nice clothes are out shopping or visiting or sitting in the teahouses. There?s music everywhere. It?s hypnotic?sitting out on a patio by the Mediterranean or the Nile, while the sky is velvet, the moon is full, and the air smells like jasmine and spice.? We want to celebrate the beauty of our cultures and celebrate all that is good in them.
