Elephant's Graveyard

Elephant's Graveyard is about the encounter between the provincial, muddy town of Erwin, Tennessee and the World Famous Sparks Circus. The circus arrives in Erwin having just left Kingsport, where they picked up a new circus hand, only referred to as Red-Haired Guy. Once in Erwin, the circus fully sets up their tent and the townspeople are filled with anticipation. The circus puts on a parade on main street, during which the Red-Haired Guy is allowed to ride the circus’ main attraction, Mary, the elephant. During the parade, because of the Red-Haired Guy's own ineptness, he enrages the elephant, who kills him. The townspeople demand that justice be served, and the resulting ghastly spectacle leaves both communities shaken to their cores
