Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens
By Bill Russell and Janet Hood
Directed by Catie O'Donnell, Music Direction by Patrick Christians
Elegies… is a series of monologues and songs inspired by the AIDS quilt and Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology. The monologues are performed by characters that have lost their lives to AIDS, while the songs are performed by characters whose loved ones have suffered from the disease.
The monologues in Elegies… range from hilarious to heartbreaking. Stories of AIDS are told by gay men of all ages, nurses, grandmothers, teenagers, children, business women, housewives, prostitutes, drug addicts and Vietnam veterans. They struggle with social stigmas, medical difficulties, family losses, betrayals by loved ones, sexual promiscuity, legal matters, guilt and acceptance. The music is interspersed with the monologues, telling tales of those left behind on earth and struggling to let go of those they’ve lost.
Featuring a cast of 45 Madison performers, Elegies... is a theatrical event not to be missed! A portion of proceeds will be donated to Madison's AIDS Network.
