Blithe Spirit
By Noël Coward
Directed by Patrick M. Strain
The smash comedy hit of the London and Broadway stages, this much-revived classic offers up the witty, debonair and sometimes infuriating novelist Charles Condomine, remarried to the stoic Ruth, but haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, the tremendously attractive, usually charming and occasionally acidic Elvira who is called up by a visiting "happy medium," one Madame Arcati. As the worldly and spritely personalities clash, Charles' current wife, Ruth, is accidentally killed, "passes over," joins Elvira and the two "blithe spirits" haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.
Our production sets the play in the Art Deco year of 1937 and we transfer the play from its original English locale to be set in the wealthy New York suburb of Scarsdale.
