Act a Lady
By Jordan Harrison
Directed by Jessie Fidler
When the men of a small, Prohibition-era town decide to put on a play dressed in “fancy-type, women-type clothes,” the whole community is affected: gender lines blur, eyebrows raise, identities explode, and life is forever changed. A thoughtful and hilarious Midwestern fable about the woman in every man and the man in every woman.

Roles
MILES (40s, male): a small business owner, leader of his group of friends, cool-headed, married to DOROTHY. Also plays LADY ROMOLA VON PLOFSDORF and VICOMTE VALENTINO UFA.
TRUE (early 30s, male): a tanner, rougher and a bit hot-headed, also plays COUNTESS ROQUEFORT.
CASPER (20s, male): a photographer, sensitive and more effeminate than the other men. Goes through the biggest self discovery. Also plays GRETA THE MAID.
DOROTHY (40s, female): an accordion teacher, married to MILES. Should ideally be able to play the accordion. Plays MILES in Act II
LORNA (late 20s, female): a chipper, make-up artist who spent time working in Hollywood before moving back home. Has an eye for TRUE. Plays TRUE in Act II
ZINA (ageless, female): a director. Strong, opinionated, butch. From Europe, has german/eastern European accent. Plays CASPER in Act II
Casting Notes: For most of the second Act, the three male actors remain in their play-within-the-play personae: Countess Roquefort, Greta The Maid, and Romola Von Plofsdorf. (Additionally, the actor who played Miles cameos as the Vicomte Valentino Ufa.) In addition to playing the female characters, the actresses now play the male characters from Act I: The actress playing Lorna now plays True, Dorothy plays Miles, and Zina is Casper.
Auditions
Actors will be asked to read dialogue from provided sides either alone or with other auditionees. Prepared monologues are optional, not required.
COVID Safety
StageQ and Bartell Theatre policy is that all production staff, crew, and cast meet the CDC’s definition of “fully-vaccinated” by the time rehearsals begin. Those wishing to audition don’t have to provide proof of vaccination status, but if cast, proof must be provided to the producer before the first rehearsal. Those who cannot be vaccinated due to medical reasons or age restrictions will be allowed to participate but are asked to contact the show’s producer ahead of time.
Masks will be optional at auditions, although actors should be prepared to wear them during the early rehearsal process of the show and up through the beginning of tech week.
