Natyarpana Dance Company
October 2003 Natyarpana Dance Company was born to share the authentic beauty and power of Indian classical dance which is over 3000 years old. Kripa Baskaran is the founder and Director of Natyarpana whose main goal is to share classical Indian culture with others beyond the immigrant community and build bridges between cultures, to create an atmosphere of peace and spirituality through classical arts. Natyarpana specializes in Bharatnatyam, one of the most celebrated art forms of Southern India that combines artistic expression with a sense of spirituality. It has roots going back to the second century BC according to Natyashastra, a treatise on performance.
Natyarpana's mission is to present the rich cultural heritage of India through performances and workshops of Indian classical dance, music and theater. The primary aim of this organization is to provide a venue for Wisconsin residents and immigrants to explore and experience classical Indian arts as a means to reflect upon their own cultural heritage. As part of its outreach mission Natyarpana serves communities that do not usually have access to ethnic arts or are unable to afford such programs. Natyarpana adopts a multicultural approach to its performances, using Mime and hand gestures to interpret stories from Indian Mythology as well as contemporary texts and poetry.
